This weekend at St Mikes we are celebrating the life of David Watson, a pioneering vicar of St Michael le Belfrey Church who died 25 years ago on 18 February 1984. Three short videos of reflections from members of St Mikes who knew David have been produced. We’ll be showing one at G2 this Sunday, but all three are below.

David Watson was Vicar of St Cuthbert’s from 1965 and planted a church into St Michael le Belfrey. He had an international ministry and was renowned for his teaching on Renewal, Evangelism and Reconciliation. Much of what St Michael’s is as a church today is due to David’s ministry in these years. He pioneered work with the arts, using drama and dance in church for the first time. He led missions around the world and was a high profile advocate of reconciliation and ecumenism in Northern Ireland. He was one of the first leaders in the UK to encourage John Wimber and the Vineyard ministry here. David left York in 1982 and died in London on 18 February 1984. We have decided to celebrate his life and legacy in all our services on 22 February. Shortly before he died David wrote the following:
“The most important lesson I have learned in these past eleven months is that God loves me, is always with me – in the dark as in the light – and that I cannot trust him too much. The best is yet to be, once we have put our lives in Christ.”
